Volcanoes National Park

Northwestern Rwanda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda

About Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, situated in northwestern Rwanda, is a haven for the endangered mountain gorillas. Established in 1925 as Africa's first national park, it covers 160 sq km of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains. The park gained international fame through the work of primatologist Dian Fossey, whose conservation efforts were chronicled in the film "Gorillas in the Mist." Today, it stands as a testament to successful conservation, with gorilla populations steadily increasing.
