Morning Arrival and Welcome Briefing
Your day begins with a warm welcome at Red Rocks Cultural Center or a nearby local village. You’ll meet your host chef and farming guide who will introduce you to Rwanda’s agricultural heritage and the traditional foods that have nourished families for generations.
Farm Visit and Ingredient Harvesting
Head to a nearby community farm, where you’ll roll up your sleeves and help harvest fresh ingredients such as cassava leaves, beans, bananas, maize, or sweet potatoes, depending on what’s in season. Learn traditional farming methods and sustainable practices passed down through generations.
Hands-On Cooking Experience
Back at the kitchen, under the guidance of a local chef, you’ll turn your harvest into a flavorful Rwandan feast. From preparing isombe (cassava leaves with peanut sauce) to making ugali, ibihaza (pumpkin stew), or brochettes, you’ll gain firsthand skills in traditional cooking techniques. You'll also learn how to grind ingredients using a mortar and pestle and cook over a charcoal fire, just like it’s done in rural homes.
Banana Beer Tasting and Cultural Storytelling
While your dishes finish cooking, enjoy a taste of traditional banana beer, a staple in rural celebrations. As you sip, listen to engaging stories about Rwandan food customs, family life, and the significance of meals in local culture.
Shared Lunch with Your Hosts
Sit down for a hearty shared meal with your hosts and fellow guests. Reflect on the experience, ask questions, and enjoy the rich flavors of the dishes you helped create, made with love, tradition, and ingredients straight from the land.
Afternoon Farewell
After lunch, you’ll have time to browse local crafts or chat further with your hosts before returning to your accommodation, full of inspiration and authentic memories.
