Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, spans over 7,800 square kilometers in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Established in 1925, it's home to an extraordinary diversity of habitats, from active volcanoes and savannas to swamps, lava plains, and the snowfields of Rwenzori mountains. The park protects over 700 bird species, 200 mammal species, and harbors more endemic species than any other park in Africa, including one-third of the world's endangered mountain gorillas.
