Discover Rwanda’s remarkable avian diversity with this 3-day birdwatching journey through two of its premier national parks: Nyungwe Forest and Akagera. From the dense montane rainforest to the open savannah, this tour is perfect for nature lovers and birding enthusiasts of all levels, offering sightings of Albertine Rift endemics and rare wetland species.
Depart early from Kigali and drive to Nyungwe National Park, home to over 300 bird species. After lunch, take a guided birdwatching walk along the forest edges and canopy trails, where you may spot the Great Blue Turaco, Ruwenzori Turaco, and Red-collared Mountain Babbler. Settle in at a nature lodge for dinner and bird call identification at dusk.
Early transfer to Akagera National Park for a full day of birding along lakes and open savannah. Search for African fish eagles, shoebills, papyrus gonoleks, and herons. Stop for a lakeside picnic before continuing through different habitats. Evening bird count and checklist session with your guide at the lodge.
Take a gentle morning walk through Akagera’s wooded hills, spotting smaller birds like bee-eaters, starlings, and sunbirds. Return to Kigali with a stopover at Nyandungu Eco Park for a final light birding stroll and coffee.
